Should I take business and economics summer courses online/in-class

Should I take business and economics summer courses online/in-class?
I'm a 1st year psychology major at York University and I hate it. Recently, I've been thinking of changing my major to something Business-related.. perhaps finance or management. The problem is.. I've never taken any class in either field.. so I don't know what they're like. Anyhoo, I'm going to be working 1, perhaps 2 (if I get it), jobs this summer to make some extra money. I was thinking of taking an Intro to Administrative studies (Business) course online and a Micro-economics course in-class (because they don't offer an micro-econ courses online). Is this a wise decision? Are they hard courses that are difficult to "grasp" online.. or at all? In the case of the econ class that meets twice a week, will I be too busy to actually do well in the class? The intro to administrative studies (business) is a full summer course.. while the micro-econ class meets twice a week and only runs may-june. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

There are several variables that I will attempt to unfold. First it depends on the school. i am not aware of how rigorous your econ class will be at your university. Every undergrad program in econ has a different focus. some are concept driven and use graphs to teach. others are math driven and teach you through solving different formulas. Micro-econ can be the best class you take or the worst depending on what is required of you. Biz admin classes usually are pretty much fluff though IMO. but your teacher could assign you an insane amount of reading or ambiguous (no real answer) type questions. Secondly, it depends on you. Psychology is one of the easiest most often over-awarded degrees IMO. You may find the rigors of another discipline difficult or you may find them a refreshing change too actually have substance to your classes. You may be very interested in the field or bored to tears. Thirdly, it depends on how much time you anticipate on spending at your job and if you would be able to do your homework in a quite focused place while on the clock (which is really hard to find) without your boss getting pissed. I knew a girl in one of my summer classes that had a full time job. She said it was VERY hard to focus on class even though her job was really easy and she was able to do all her homework on the clock. The whole point of a summer class is to take 17 weeks of junk and cram it into 5. They usually move really fast. I guess what I am trying to say is that there is NO way that anyone on yahoo will be able to totally guess exactly how your life is. but, with two jobs it would prety much be impossible. with one job and two summer classes you would probably get lower grades in both of them due to time constraints for studies. You need to decide what is more worthwhile. it would be worse to screw your GPA and lose the money for the classes and not even get paid that much over the summer than to just take the summer off and kick butt. Or it would be better to totally get soaked up in the school and forget about the job and bust out the schoolwork. There is absolutely no way you would be able to take two summer classes while working two jobs and get good grades in them and keep your boss happy. i don't care if your freaking superman, your brain would explode I think.

I would bo business management..more respected and alot more broad. So you can apply for a job in Hr or any other business discipline.

There are several small business classes offered at my local community college. I would suggest Accounting and Finance and some general tax class to learn about tax law's impact on small business.

I am interested in getting an MBA, with a concentration in either finance or general business. My undergraduate degree was in computer science, so I was never required to take a business or even economics class to graduate. Now I am faced with a decision. Should I take some business classes (or finance, economics, etc) at a local community college before applying to graduate business school, or should i instead invest that time and effort into a GMAT preparation course?

Business is highering some poets now so go figure. Follow your interests, you'll get better grades. Why not ask the department heads of the schools your interested in. You could even probably phone, at least for an appointment. You might be able to apply directly, depending on their mood.

Community college level coursework after earning your BS will most likely not improve your admissions chances to a good school. However, you can certainly use it to prepare yourself and see if you enjoy the topics. The most important admission factors are your work experience, leadership experience, undergrad GPA and also your GMAT. The only one of those that you can affect in the short term is your GMAT. It's not the only factor, but a great GMAT score will fill your inbox with invitations to apply. Also, you should not view your engineering background as a disadvantage, but accentuate it as an example of your varied skill set.

Most master's degrees take one year. The reason why an MBA takes two years is because everyone needs a year to get up to the level of an undergraduate business major. The better B-Schools want a wide variety of students -- and the majority of them have no academic experience in business. The top B-Schools will be impressed with a high GMAT score -- but not one of them will be impressed with someone taking classes at a community college.

Take Marketing, Business, and Arts Administration classes. Arts Administration is pretty much dealing w/ the Admin. part of the Performing Arts (which could apply to management and even promotion). Otherwise, work on something to do w/ Business and/or Marketing. Then go to college to get your Bachelors. If you want to deal w/ performers, performance buildings, and/or music conservatories, then they are looking for someone with those degrees, plus a strong background/love for music, so if you can take some music courses that would be great (music history, etc.) Good luck!

I would say marketing and business classes - know your way around finance too! Seriously though if you want to be in music promotion or a music manager... School doesn't hurt but the only thing that will get you a job in the music business is experience so get yourself an internship or better yet just got find a local artist to manage and make it up as you go along- there is nothing like experience in the music field to get you a job in the future- it's all who you know so go pick up so work - even if you do it for no money, promoting or managing just to meet people and get experience. I'm not saying education isn't important but having actually worked in music will get you more jobs and prepare you more than any college course. Best of luck, -Rick-
